Regeneration sees region revitalised
With many town centres struggling to survive, a glimmer of hope about how to turn round their fortunes is to be found in North Ayrshire.
Since a £2.75m regeneration project completed two years ago, Kilwinning’s historic town centre has attracted around a dozen retailers to open up new outlets as well as a regular farmers’ market.
The project, which was initiated by the Irvine Bay Regeneration Company (IBRC), involved providing new paving, seating, lighting and landscaping. It was so good it won the Public Realm/Landscaping category at the prestigious UK Roses Design Awards in 2011.
