Founder of jewellery boutique Brazen
After graduating from the jewellery course at Glasgow School of Art Sarah Raffel knew she wanted to run her own business.
Brazen was set up to sell new designs while also offering workshops for the graduate and start-up markets in the trade.
Now the boutique in the Merchant City carries more than 40 designer collections alongside undertaking its own commissions.
Raffel said: "The intention was to bring a new type of jewellery to the Glasgow consumer and to bring the consumer closer to the design and making process.
"We are regularly reacquainting ourselves with customers who admired a ring or pendant in the window then got it as a gift from boyfriend.
"Six years on those couples are now returning to the store to celebrate their engagement and commission their engagement ring."
The retail sector has been particularly hard hit in recent years and Raffel admits there have been tough times.
But she is confident of pushing Brazen forward.
She said: "While competition increases - largely from ecommerce - small independents like ourselves need to focus less on price and more on service and unique selling points.
"I remember someone telling me, only one can be the cheapest, the rest have to be better and thats what we work by.
"We can't always win on price and we dont have the buying power of larger companies however, we are a young, dynamic business that can make the most of our resources and punch above our weight."
