Managing director of Spider Online
After successfully delivering digital projects for Royal Bank of Scotland and Standard Life Bank John Campbell was headhunted to join public relations agency Citigate Smarts.
Less than three years later he had been promoted to the board but in 2004 decided it was time to branch out on his own.
Web design and digital marketing agency Spider Online began life in his spare room but now provides services for blue chip clients such as BAA, Scottish Power, FirstGroup and Aegon.
Campbell starts a typical week with account and project managers in Glasgow to discuss current workloads and events.
Although he has stepped back a bit from the coal face he still spends a lot of time travelling around Britain to meet clients.
He said: “Over the last couple of years I have moved away from all the day to day project and campaign work to try to plan for the future.
“We are always trying to develop new revenue streams and have recently started working with a brilliant Social media expert.
“In any given week I can be in England, Scotland and sometimes Wales.
“I enjoy travelling to see clients as you can cover so much more face to face.”
At the end of the week he checks in the the finance director to check the company's accounts and discuss billing.
He added: “It is imperative to know where you sit financially.
“We have always been profitable, but we are now even more efficient, with better response times and strong client satisfaction.
“My biggest tip is to be certain you know whether your clients are profitable - there is no point in being busy fools.”
