As many as 20 per cent of people never visit tourist attractions within 10 miles of their home.

Londoners are some of the most guilty, with one in five never going to see Big Ben and a third not ever going to Buckingham Palace.

Only 38 per cent of Scots have seen Hadrian's Wall, according to the survey by food companyWalkers as part of its tourist campaign called Brit Trips.

Also, 25 per cent of those living in the North East have never gone to see the Angel of the North.
