In brief... - Virtual holidays on holodecks

Holidaymakers will be able to get afeeling for a resort by the use of holograms, it has been predicted.

Star Trek-style "holodecks" will enable would be-tourists to "feel" what a hotel or a foreign beach is like, forecasted Graham Donoghue, Thomson.co.uk new media director.

He also predicted that a rapid contact facility would eventually be available to help relatives and friends at home track down travellers through the location of their phone.

Such a scheme would be particularly reassuring for the parents of gap-year student travellers.
