Company executives should have their pay and bonuses linked to meeting environmental targets, the UK's biggest trade union has urged.
Unite said union reps should also have the right to examine information on a firm's impact on the environment to help develop "green" workplaces.
The union surveyed 10,000 members in the electronics and computer industries and found that more than four in five believed energy was wasted in their offices and factories.
Unite national officer Peter Skyte said: "More CO2 is emitted by processes in the workplace than at home, and half of the energy used in the UK comes from workplaces. It makes sense that unions should challenge employers to take action on climate change and the environment. We believe workers can contribute to the preservation of the environment."
