In brief...: IT pay higher than inflation

Workers employed in the IT sector have seen their basic pay rise faster than at any time in the past three years, new figures have shown.

Their basic pay has increased by an above-inflation 4.8 per cent in the past year, according to salary survey specialists Celre. The rise defied the current economic downturn in the UK, although many employers were still struggling to find and keep skilled computer workers, the report said.

Pay increased by 5.7 per cent when bonuses were included, the study covering more than 570 workplaces found. Celre managing editor Mark Crail said: "IT staff have managed to defy the downward trend of the economy so far. Salaries are still rising faster than inflation and there is little indication that redundancies are becoming any more widespread."
