My working week..

Gavin Clark, managing director of 999 Design, shares his weekly schedule

Gavin Clark recently joined the 'experiential marketing' agency 999 Design as managing director of the group's Glasgow office.

The firm was founded in 1982 by Richard Bissland and Bill Gaughan and now has offices in Manchester and London. But Scottishness is still key to 999.

"Our Scottish roots are an intrinsic part of our personality," says Clark.

Clark spent much of his week celebrating 999's silver anniversary by unveiling a new brand identity. If you are in the business of designing websites and posters and logos and brands for clients, such as the recent Charles Rennie Mackintosh Festival in Glasgow, then keeping your own brand and website up to date is essential. But all the celebrations didn't get in the way of the job, which is growing the Scottish arm of the business.

"This week we secured a new piece of global business with a leading drinks brand, which we will roll out early in the New Year."

His bosses Bissland and Gaughan hope to double turnover in the next three years.

999 currently has a turnover of about £3.5million but plans to grow both organically and through acquisition.

Early in his career Clark ran his own small marketing firm in Glasgow before London came calling.

He spent seven years with agencies KLP and Momentum, developing brand concepts for clients including Intel, Budweiser and American Express.

"I moved to London for the simple reason that I wanted to work with bigger clients and learn from the big boys. The industry is changing though with large brands now turning to smaller, dynamic consultancies to fulfil their creative design and marketing needs."

Having tucked under his belt experience of major brands and global agencies, he felt able and ready to come back home to work with a smaller, more nimble agency.

"I've always been very entrepreneurial and I love the buzz of being 'hands-on' and helping to grow the business."
