In brief...: School aids developers

Work on the construction of the new £7million Primary School in Douglas, South Lanarkshire, got under way when staff and pupils helped developers Morgan Ashurst dig the first footings.

Neil McDonald, of Morgan Ashurst, was joined by headteacher Stewart Troop, p7 pupils Caitlyn Little, Megan Little and Callum Wardrop and South Lanarkshire Council project officer Gordon Turnbull on the site in Ayr Road.

Douglas Primary School is part of an £850m modernisation programme which will see all 124 of South Lanarkshire's primary schools being rebuilt or refurbished by 2016.

Harry Thorburn, Morgan Ashurst managing director for Scotland, said: "As much of the work is being carried out during term time, we will be liaising closely with staff and students at the school to ensure that disruption to their day-to-day activities is kept to a minimum."
