The misuse of USB flash drives at work could cost firms up to £1.3million in security breaches, experts have warned.

The European Network and Information Security Agency said that USB flash drives are being used to breach network security and install malicious codes on corporate IT systems.

Organisations allowing the unfettered use of such devices could belosing between £51,000 and £1.3m for every security violation that is made, it said. The agency also warned that between 80 per cent and 90 per cent of flash drives sold to businesses last year were not encrypted or stored in secure locations.
