New software to make it easier for developers
Software developer RunRev is hoping to revolutionise mobile phone app development with the latest version of its LiveCode software.
LiveCode is an English-like coding language which developers can use to build applications to run on different mobile devices and platforms.
The fifth incarnation of the software, which is officially launched today, now includes a high performance graphics engine to add visual effects and gaming features.
These so-called 'Gamification' features allow developers to mix traditional interface buttons, text boxes and scrolling grids with rich graphics and animation to make apps more interactive.
Edinburgh based RunRev claims developing apps on LiveCode 5 is also much faster.
Founder and chief executive, Kevin Miller, said: “Our focus with the new version of LiveCode was to help developers get the job done, from simple apps that solve specific challenges to the most sophisticated development projects.
“We’ve packed more than 2000 features into LiveCode 5 and it essentially allows developers to produce richer applications than ever before, particularly in adding gaming elements which is the next big step in app development.
“LiveCode 5 puts app development and interactive app development into the price range of most businesses.
“There is nothing else on the market at the moment which combines all these elements for app development, so we're essentially first to market and has huge potential for us, particularly in the US which is already around half of our existing market.”
An earlier version of LiveCode, released last March, has brought in close to £1 million in sales globally for RunRev since launch.
RunRev currently employs 20 staff at its Edinburgh base.
