New container equipment after freight increase
Clydeport has spent s1 million on container equipment after volumes at Greenock Ocean Terminal increased by 15 per cent.
The company now has 10 straddle carriers and three empty container handlers at the port.
Currently Greenock, the main container port for Glasgow and the surrounding area, is handling more than 80,000 containers a year.
Bruce Clarke, maintenance manager, said: "This equipment is critical to our day-to-day port operations and to our ambitions of further growth in the future.
"These new investments reflect the growth of the container business in the last 12 months and, in addition, we have plans in place to invest in another carrier and handler later this year as part of our ongoing replacement programme."
Clydeport has also invested s150,000 in security improvements around the cruise terminal with around 57,000 passengers expected to arrive via 35 cruise ships this year.
