long term lease agreed for 7,000 sq. ft unit on Sauchiehall Street
The Co-operative Food is to open a new Glasgow city centre store on Sauchiehall Street.
The food retail subsidiary of The Co-operative Group has agreed a 16-and-a-half year lease on nearly 7,000 sq. ft of space and expects trading at the new store in the run up to Christmas.
Jones Lang LaSalle acted as agents for Co-operative Food and Winton Faith acted on behalf of the landlord.
David Simmons, director of Jones Lang LaSalle in Glasgow, said: “143 Sauchiehall Street will fulfil The Co-operative Food’s desire for a large flag-ship store in one of busiest retail areas in Glasgow.
“Although Sauchiehall Street has suffered, like many, during the economic downturn with increasing vacancies, the street retains an impressively high level of footfall and The Co-operative Food is confident that its new store will be extremely successful.
“The premise provides The Co-operative Food with a large enough frontage and suitable internal configuration to show-case its latest shop-fit and provide sufficient space for its full product range stamping a real presence in the area.”
Brian Lochrie, regional acquisitions manager for The Co-operative Food, added: “A new larger store in such a busy part of the city centre is a great boost for The Co-operative Food, and will complement our existing outlets in Glasgow.
“We’re looking forward to serving even more city centre shoppers, and are confident the new store will be an asset to Glasgow.”
The Co-operative Group operates around 4,800 retail trading outlets across the UK, including around fifty food stores in the greater Glasgow area.
