Plans submitted for £44m Commonwealth Games development

Plans have been submitted for a £44 million multi-use retail development at the Commonwealth Games site in Glasgow which developers say will create around 400 new jobs.Dutch hotel chain The Golden Tulip will anchor the development at Springfield Cross in the east end of the city with a new 160-bedroom hotel.The proposed site for what has been named the Arena development, opposite Celtic Park, is alongside the new National Indoor Sports Arena and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.Glasgow developer Kevin Fawcett said the plans, which also include restaurant, retail and health centre units, will meet the needs of athletes and visitors to the 2014 Commonwealth Games.He said: “This development is an essential component of the regeneration of the area already being achieved by Glasgow City Council and Clyde Gateway, and will make a real difference to Glasgow's east end and, most importantly, those who live there."Glasgow City Council is expected to rule on the planning application by July of this year.Read
