Belhaven owner posts healthy profits rise

Higher food sales boosts Greene King figures

Brewer and pubs operator Greene King has reported a seven per cent increase in first-half profits after benefiting from higher food sales.

The group, behind brands including Belhaven Best which is brewed in Dunbar, reported a pre-tax profit of £82.7 million for the 24 weeks to 14 October, up from £77.2 million a year earlier. Turnover rose by 7.3 per cent higher at £566.2 million.

Like-for-like food sales were up 4.9 per cent compared with last year, while drink sales were up 3.8 per cent.

The company said trading since the start of the second half has been slightly slower, with like-for-like sales in its retail division up 2.2 per cent.

But it added Christmas was “looking positive” with bookings up 17 per cent on last year.

Chief executive Rooney Anand said: “While we continue to see a challenging environment for the UK consumer, our strategy has been tailored for these conditions – we provide our customers with ‘everyday treats’ and value for money.

“We are confident we can generate further success and deliver sustainable earnings and dividend growth for our shareholders.”
