Shellfish firm nets cash aid

In brief...

A shellfish firm has received a funding boost of almost £500,000 from the European Fisheries Fund.

Isle of Shuna plans to use the cash to move Scotland to the forefront of the £60million European mussel farming market. The grant will be spent on new cooking facilities and equipment at the business' main manufacturing plant in Shetland.

This will support new ranges of Scottish mussel products which should be available in the next three months. Managing director Donny Gillies said the firm's production will double, turnover increase by at least £3m and 10 new jobs will be created.

He said: "The demand for our fresh Scottish mussel products is overwhelming, and this new funding will ensure that demand will always be met."
