Kennedy wins rector position

Perhaps it was no surprise that the most experienced politician in the race was elected as Rector of Glasgow University.

Charles Kennedy was the clear winner, beating off Green MSP Patrick Harvie, lawyer Aamer Anwar and broadcaster Hardeep Singh Kohli. The margin of victory was substantial with Kennedy polling almost twice as many votes as nearest challenger Anwar.

How Kennedy intends to follow in the footsteps of former rectors such as Johnny Ball, Arthur Montford and Richard Wilson remains to be seen.

But he has promised to find enough time to fulfil the role. The post involves representing students' interests and taking the chair of the university court, which administers resources.
