Film director goes back to his roots

Hopefully the new cinema advert for VisitScotland won't carry an 18 certificate or make audiences hide behind their hands.

The 90-second opus is directed by Peter Webber who was most recently behind the camera charting the early days of a certain Dr Hannibal Lecter in Hollywood smash Hannibal Rising.

Perhaps bosses at the tourism body were more convinced by Webber's efforts on the critically acclaimed Girl With A Pearl Earring starring Scarlett Johannson and Colin Firth.

The advert, shot on Barra and featuring music from the Waterboys, features a couple escaping the big city and enjoying the delights of the Outer Hebrides without any fava beans or chianti in sight.

It will be shown at cinemas around London, the south and midlands for the next five weeks.

Peter Webber said: "I was very excited by the opportunity to make a film in the Outer Hebrides. My mother's family come from North Tolsta and many of my relatives still live there. I spent all of my childhood summers on the Isle of Lewis in my grandmother's croft. So on a personal level, it was a delight to film in the region."

Philip Riddle, VisitScotland's chief executive, said: "Our recent research has given us a very clear understanding of the markets that will bring the best return for Scottish tourism.

"This insight has enabled us to tailor this campaign for the midlands, London and the South of England specifically. There is huge potential within the domestic market."
