Contract joy for shipbuilders

Work on aircraft carriers to be done in Rosyth and Glasgow

Scottish shipbuilders received a major boost when the Ministry of Defence announced it is to go ahead with an order for two new aircraft carriers.

HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales will be assembled at the Babcock shipyard in Rosyth and work will also be carried out by BAE Systems in Glasgow.

The 65,000 tonne vessels are due to be completed by 2015.

The £4bn deal is set to be awarded to a consortium including BAE Systems, VT Group and Babcock.
